The Untethered Soul: A Journey to the Infinite

Spirituality can be a hot topic today and often comes in many different forms. But it’s hard to distinguish what it means, how we should employ, and why it could even be important to us in the first place.

I first heard about The Untethered Soul through a Tony Robbins podcast. What intrigued me was how the author, Michael A. Singer, talked about arriving at the answers in his book only through deep meditation on the thoughts and emotions that were troubling him. This was what I felt like I was missing from most spiritual talk I’ve heard of. Whether it’s in the form of a motivational video or the idea of a quick yoga pose to “open up the chakras”, I felt the benefits were short term and not as fundamental to the questions at hand.

So when I saw The Untethered Soul on a Barnes and Nobles bookshelf, I decided to take a quick glance to see what I would be in for. Even if I was sure I’d like his thoughts, I wasn’t interested in someone convincing me of their philosophies. From the beginning the author was already leading me on a path. He kept asking me to ask myself “Am I my thoughts? What are my thoughts? What significance do they have?” He wanted me to find the answers myself, as inevitable as they may be.

I immediately purchased the book.

From there I became mesmerized. The beauty of it was that I wasn’t reflecting on the book. Each page made me reflect on reality itself by asking the proper questions. Going from consciousness to ego to energy to death to happiness felt like a journey the author was showing me but allowed me to walk myself. Discovering these truths through experience helped understand certain truths much deeper.

I can safely say that The Untethered Soul is the most transformative book I’ve read. It’s the type of book that, if I was stuck on a desert island, I could read and enjoy being trapped on a desert island. It’s opened me up to new avenues to pursue in understanding our experience in life and the contents of our happiness.

Overall, I would highly, highly recommend this book. Perhaps the effect might not be as great if you are already deep into spirituality. But otherwise I felt that it was a fantastic read. Admittedly, I now feel that there is even more to explore beyond this book after my experience on a 10-day meditation retreat. However, I would not have even done that course if it was not for this book. Truly, it was a life-changing read.
