One of the reasons I asked you to think about your time dials a few days ago is because it’s actually quite difficult for us to think about what we are actually striving towards and using that as inspiration for our actions.
There’s certain areas we want to cover like security, comfort, health, and freedom, but it’s actually quite difficult to describe to someone what we want beyond those vague terms.
For example, many people would gladly describe their financial success on the financial freedom to have the ability to do whatever they wanted for life and retirement.
And while the motivation for this makes sense, it’s not actually a positive motivation.
Most people, if probed for what they would actually do with that freedom, would say generic things like travel or food, without much thought to detail or why they want to do those things.
It seems that most people tend to view these goals not as positive directions, but an indicator of getting out of negative situation.
It’s not that they want freedom for something. It’s that they want freedom from something. Like their job, obligations, and other things.
It’s not that they want to achieve a certain body type from being fit. It’s that they want to get rid of a body type they don’t like.
The list can go on. While these motivators can be strong, they will never mean something without a positive affirmation about what you’re really heading towards, rather than something you’re heading away from. It’s very uninspiring to wake up thinking about how you want to get rid of any debt you have versus what you hope to be able to do once you’re out of debt.
I think we’ve just spent so much time being ok with vague conceptions about what we actually want and being stuck in our current situation, we don’t let our imagination run wild enough to discover deep down what we are really looking to do and achieve.
Take some time to look back at your time dials and think about them in even more detail. This is more than you want to spend less time on something else. This is about looking forward to something you want to invest time in. It’s going to be important for when you actually get there, and implementing the tactics to do so.
P.S. If you’d like to, share with me/e-mail me this detailed concept of your time with me.
